Fishing tales

This spoon (see photo) was presented to me by a Finnish angler when I was in the country of Suomi. Outwardly, it seemed, she did not represent anything special: a brass plate one and a half millimeters thick - an uncomplicated shape (slightly curved), the color is so-so, frankly, not at all original ...
The front side is red with a stripe, the back is white. But, as the Finn assured (if it was correctly translated from Finnish), they say, this is a crazy spoon. Since, as they say, “they don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”, out of politeness, of course, I was scattered in gratitude to the donor.

At home I showed this spoon to my fishing friends, and their verdict with insignificant variety was: "The spoon is like a spoon, nothing special." Only my relative, an inveterate fisherman Alexander Rykov, was original, as he suggested: "What is good for a Finn is unlikely for a Russian." And for some time I consigned to oblivion the donated "shaker".

Having lost three spinners on another fishing trip, I finally remembered about the Finnish gift. The peck was bad that day. The reason for this was either heat, or strong wind, or something else, but my constant fishing companion Vadim and I made no less than fifty casts with a spinning rod. And ... not a single bite! It was then that I decided to use a gift spinner.

In the place where we fished from the boat, the depth was one and a half meters. The first cast I made towards the reed and reed wall. As soon as the spoon sank to the bottom, he began to slowly raise it. And then the grip followed. I hooked, and my trophy was a kilogram pike.

The second cast is slightly away from the first. And again the pike. Two meters further - another predator fluttered in the boat. In half an hour we managed to catch four more pikes. After that, the biting of toothy robbers stopped, but they began to take perches. True, all are small.

- Why don't we try to catch bigger "sailors", - Vadim suggested: - Let's get up at the depth.

No sooner said than done. We moved to another place, dropped anchor on the edge of a pit four meters deep. The first cast brought a half-kilogram humpback. And then the bites followed one after another.

As soon as the bait, being at the bottom, began to move, a bite followed immediately. I was tempted to catch and fish, but I decided to stop: our household with Vadim obviously cannot process so much fish.

“The occasional bite is always rich,” my partner concluded when we finished fishing.

But he was wrong, because in the future, in any circumstances, in different reservoirs, my "vibrator" invariably attracted predators. Thereby providing excellent bite. Observing the passion with which the fish chases the spoon bait, familiar and unfamiliar fishermen asked to show it.

And another long-term fishing companion of mine, Igor, even made at his factory, it would seem, exactly the same spoon. Outwardly, it seems like one to one. However, it is not for nothing that popular wisdom says: "A copy is always worse than the original." Alas, Igor's "shaker" turned out to be far from being as catchy as mine. Indeed, it turned out as in the well-known proverb: "Fedot, but not that one." Probably, this copy did not have that zest that makes the original unique bait.

Apparently, the manufacturers of the spinner given to me by the Finn put something invisible in it, intangible to humans, but extremely attractive to fish. Hence the stunning result.

I was repeatedly offered to sell a spoon, moreover, often for a lot of money. It would be possible for this amount to buy a dozen imported baits. But I did not even allow the thought to part with such a catchy spoon. And therefore he took care of her like the apple of his eye.

Alas, nothing lasts forever under the moon. In October last year, Vadim's colleague at work told him that on Ladoga, at the mouth of the Volkhov, the autumn course of pike perch had begun. The weather was pre-winter, very nasty: from the sky it poured a cold drizzle, then snow pellets fell. I really didn’t want to go fishing in such a wet area, but Vadim still persuaded me.

Having chosen the day when the heavenly chancellery had mercy and the precipitation stopped, Vadim and I moved to Ladoga. We arrived at a familiar place, anchored the boat in a small bay, closed from the main Volkhov Bay by two islands. The depth is two and a half meters.

Since pike perch is a bottom fish, the tackle has to be lowered to the bottom. I started fishing with a spinner. But time passed, and the bites were zero. Then I put on a wobbler, then a twister and finally a popper. Empty. Only after these failures did he decide to use his beloved, trouble-free "shaker".

As soon as the spoon disappeared into the water, such a blow followed that the spinning rod escaped from my hands, and I barely had time to intercept it. A short fight - and a two-kilogram pike perch flopped into the boat. It was followed by another one, but much less: about a kilogram. The third cast turned out to be fatal!

A sharp bite followed, I hooked, pulled the line and went cold: the spoon was clearly caught on something. In vain I pulled the line in different directions: up and down, left and right, everything was in vain - the bait did not give in.

And despair seized me: on the one hand, I wanted to pull the line as hard as possible, maybe the spoon would free itself. On the other hand, from too strong jerks, the line could break at any moment, and then goodbye to the spoon! The detachment did not help either.

In the summer, I would have climbed into the water without hesitation, but now, in October ?! B-r-r-r. However, I didn't give up. I lowered the spinning rod into the water and Vadim and I went to the shore. I cut the stake and we returned to the fishing spot. Vadim hooked his spinning rod's spinners hooked up and pulled my spinning rod out of the water. I tied the line of my spinning rod to the stake, drove it into the ground. That was the end of the fishing trip.

Vadim and I returned the next day, with the appropriate diving equipment. I put on a wetsuit, put on a mask, took a pipe mouthpiece in my mouth and plunged into the water. Visibility is no more than half a meter. He started, naturally, with a stake.

It is not for nothing that it is said that trouble does not come alone…. Having easily found the stake, I began to examine it, in search of a fishing line. After all, it should lead me to the stuck spoon. However, it was not: only what was wound on a stake remained of it. The rest of the line is gone!

Then I began to examine the bottom. Ignoring the terrible cold, the tremor shaking my whole body, I literally examined and felt the ground centimeter by centimeter until I came across a snag, which presumably caught my spoon. True, the driftwood was almost completely in the ground, only one branch was sticking out. And around the flat bottom.

I dived and dived, literally, until I was blue in the face, until Vadim stopped me:

- Come on, Sasha, this gimp. You look for a cat in a dark room when it's not there.

Reluctantly, I had to come to terms with the idea that my "vibrator" was lost forever. Discussing the situation with the spoon with Vadim, we came to the conclusion that, most likely, the fish, twitching, freed the spoon from the driftwood, and then cut the line at the stake.

Now, returning from a particularly unsuccessful fishing trip, I remember with longing that truly wonderful spinner that never let me down. And I often look at her photo. However, I have nothing else ...

Cottage style garden

When professionals and enthusiasts get down to business, a beautiful English cottage garden on a small plot becomes not a dream, but a reality. Landscape designer Svetlana Chizhova talks about creating a small and cozy garden.

About ten kilometers south of Moscow, in one of the gardening associations, we created a small garden on a plot of 12 acres. More precisely, it is even two adjacent plots of 6 acres, which were combined.

Beginning of work

The hostess, Vera Mikhailovna, is a great lover of gardening, a plant connoisseur and a strict customer who wanted to achieve perfection in everything. Several years ago she moved to the Moscow region from St. Petersburg. There, in the northern capital, she left a beautiful garden, where everything was planned and planted with her own hands, she was lovingly cultivated, and it was there that she gained practical experience in gardening.

When we first got to the site, there was already a main house and a bathhouse was under construction. Several fruit trees and two large thujas have survived. Vera Mikhailovna dreamed of such a garden, where different zones and ideas would be combined, in which every corner would be very beautiful. She saw a lot in magazines and on websites, read about gardens and on her site wanted to embody the ideas she liked most.

The main areas of the garden

The project was built in such a way that in the center we left an open space, a lawn, and along the perimeter we placed a rather large reservoir with a bridge and a waterfall, a rose garden, a cereal garden, a rockery path, a vegetable garden, a terrace for relaxation and a planting zone. This is a very convenient and ergonomic way to organize space in small areas.

Rest area

There is a place in the garden from where you can see almost the entire garden - you can admire it while sitting or lying on the rocking sofa. The site is framed with roses, and you can get to it along the walking path from the bathhouse or from the house.

Cereal garden

The main paths with a concrete base lead from the house to the bathhouse and to the garden. But one path laid on the sand is special. It goes through the flower garden, and flowers "pass" through it. It turned out to be a very interesting effect. In this flower garden we have planted a lot of cereals, it can even be called in accordance with the fashionable trend now "Garden of cereals"... We planted breeze, kaleria, millet, miscanthus, molin and other herbs here, mixed them with astrantia, bells, coreopsis, peonies and added beautiful stones.

Pond design

The reservoir in our project is quite large. It has an elongated curved shape - such smooth outlines of the coast look very beautiful. A waterfall is built in the corner of the site, the sound of water flowing down the stones soothes and adjusts to pacifying thoughts.

Near the waterfall, masking a fence, two willows grow: Sverdlovskaya Winding 2 and Waterfall... These are willows of the Ural selection, absolutely resistant and winter-hardy in our climate. The first has twisted, curly, slightly drooping branches, and the second has an excellent weeping crown shape.

A humpbacked stone bridge invites you to go to the other side, where a recreation area is arranged. We made it concrete and faced it with sandstone, so it forms a single whole with the concrete base of the walkway.

The far bank is raised and decorated with a retaining wall, the pond is decorated with aquatic plants. Among them are varietal nymphs, schenoplectus, paniculata sedge Monet, feed (cyperus), irises. Ornamental shrubs and flowers grow along the banks. The edge of the pond bowl is decorated with a coin loosestrife - it grows quickly and covers it.

New registration

When we were already finishing work on the object, Vera Mikhailovna went to St. Petersburg and brought from there her favorite plants, by the way, rather large ones. Among them were varietal spruces about two meters high, rhododendrons, roses, an unusual dwarf mountain ash, interesting perennials. Each of the green pets was something dear to the mistress - she remembers their history, how and where she bought them, how she planted and took care of them. These plants fell on our head quite unexpectedly, when all plantings for the project had already been completed, but we were able to harmoniously fit them into the garden, which will become their permanent residence.

The style turned out to be very similar to the English cute and sincere little garden at the cottage, where there are many flowers, there is something to admire. There are places for contemplation - benches, a sofa - a swing and even a comfortable couch. And at the same time, everything is arranged very conveniently and practically.

Where without a vegetable garden

We have provided for the beds, but we did not break them in a standard way, but arranged them in arcs that extend from the wrought-iron gazebo in the corner of the garden. All beds are planked and raised.

So it is more convenient to work in the garden, and the earth does not spill out onto the paths. The vegetable garden, although small, gives enough greens to the table. It grows strawberries, herbs, beetroot and carrot beds, and even zucchini. You can wash vegetables right in the garden; for this, a column is provided to which a summer water supply is connected.

Berry bushes and several fruit trees are planted next to the garden.

How to make paving paths

Two types of stone were used for paving at this facility - flagstone sandstone and chipped gabbro. In general, the simplest materials. We used gabbro as a solid rock at the entrance to the garage, and laid out the paving stones in the form of a "scales" pattern. Sandstone was used for the footpaths.

Tricks for a successful gardener

This garden is designed to minimize maintenance work. Of course, you won't be able to take care of the garden at all, but these hassles can be minimized. We think it over at the stage of landscape design. To facilitate the work of garden maintenance, help:

  • simple lawn shapes with smooth outlines
  • mulching under plantings (prevents weed growth)
  • automatic irrigation system (its advantages are obvious).

Despite the fact that now once a week a service team comes to the facility, Vera Mikhailovna herself devotes every free minute to her beloved garden. The result is beautiful, well-groomed plants, flowering of some is replaced by others, harvest ripens in the beds, roses are fragrant.

Main zones

The garden is stylistically divided into three zones. The area adjacent to the house is a cottage-style prefab flower garden where I give myself the freedom to experiment with small shrubs and bright perennials, including my favorite phlox, peonies and daylilies. There is a constant rotation of plants, and sometimes I can easily completely redo a flower garden that takes several tens of meters.

The main part of the garden is located at some distance from the house and has a more restrained, natural style. Here the dominant feature is the old-timers-oaks, and it is to them that all other plants are subordinated, shading and maintaining their scale and beauty. A group of trees is connected from below by a single mixborder of shade-tolerant plants. Here, under the shelter of oak crowns, fieldfare, rhododendrons, panicle hydrangeas, as well as hosts, rogers, astilbe, buzulniks, ferns and many others grow freely.

The third zone is dedicated to household needs. This is the smoothest and lightest place on the site. There is a vegetable garden, greenhouses and an orchard here.Apple trees, pears, currants, gooseberries and honeysuckle, despite their young age, are already delighting with a stable harvest. The entire range of vegetables is planted in specially equipped beds, from potatoes to beets, and in greenhouses, changing places, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are obligatory for growing.

Mulberry leaf tea recipe

It is tea that is considered the most common remedy in the treatment of various ailments, so it should be brewed without mistakes. For a liter of boiling water, you need 2 tablespoons of dried mulberry foliage. The tea must be infused with the lid closed. To normalize the condition or treat a number of diseases, it is recommended to drink a glass of this tea half an hour before meals. Remember, this is a medicinal tea, so sugar is prohibited.

Mulberry is able to please not only with tasty and healthy fruits, but also with foliage, which has a lot of useful properties.

Where did the usual vegetables come from - historical and unknown facts

Rarely does anyone, eating their favorite salad or vegetable dish, think about the origin and homeland of their beloved fruit. On the contrary, many are sure that their favorite tomatoes, cucumbers or cabbage have always been in Ukraine, since our ancestors loved these vegetables no less than today's consumers. Despite this position, every vegetable somewhere first appeared, and this is far from the territory of Ukraine or its neighbors, so you should understand where the vegetables come from, which are the basis of our diet.

For a more comfortable distribution and a clear guideline, we will try to summarize vegetables by parts of the world.
